Questions and Concerns
We will do everything we can to minimize any adverse impacts caused by the Big Shift building conversion projects and appreciate your cooperation. Should you have questions or concerns please review our FAQ in the right-hand column and/or contact the Big Shift team.
About Building Conversions
The Big Shift is about “shifting” our campus from steam to hot water to heat our buildings and moving us closer to meeting our zero carbon emissions goals. While the project includes miles of trenching to accommodate large, hot-water-carrying pipes, it also includes converting the infrastructure inside buildings to utilize the new heat source.
During active construction, buildings whose infrastructure will be updated and the approximate timing for the conversion will be listed below.
FAQ
- Can you do this work in the evening or on weekends?
- Unfortunately, no. This project was not funded to support evening and weekend work by our contractors. However, we will do everything we can to help mitigate the impact this construction may have on the work, research and teaching taking place in your building.
- How does this impact me?
- For a few days during the time that your building is being converted, you will be without heat, and, depending on your location, hot water, for a few days. We will coordinate with each building as construction approaches to communicate the specific dates and impact.
- How many days will we be without heat or heat and hot water?
- This will vary depending on the building. As the building conversion date for your building gets closer, we will reach out with dates and impact. If you have concerns or questions that are not answered here, please email bigshift@ucdavis.edu.
- When will these dates be confirmed?
- As the date for your building conversion approaches, we will coordinate with the person/people identified as your building and/or department facility manager. Also, please feel free to reach out to us with questions via bigshift@ucdavis.edu.
- How long does this process take and what is involved?
- You can find the timeframe for the entire building conversion process under the column header "Construction Dates." During this timeframe the contractor will be prepping your building to switch from utilizing steam heat to utilizing the campus's new hot water heating system. For a few days during the construction, buildings may lose heat or hot water. The impact and timeframe will vary from building to building. We will coordinate with each building as construction approaches.
- Can we reschedule?
- Minor adjustments to the schedule may be feasible. Please contact the Big Shift team at bigshift@ucdavis.edu with your needs.
